Inspiration from Outdoor Female Role Models

Where are our outdoor female role models? According to a recent study from outdoor retailer REI, 63% of women said they could not think of an outdoor female role model–an obstacle that may be keeping women from getting outside and enjoying an adventure or two. “A casual look at any portrayal of the outdoors—movie, magazine, catalog, store, bookshelf—shows male imagery, heroes, and stories,” writes Jerry Stritzke, REI President, and CEO. “This doesn’t honor or accurately depict the important role that women play in the outdoors. As the saying goes, ‘You can’t be what you can’t see.'”

The study also found that more than 85% of all women believe the outdoors positively affects mental health, physical health, happiness and overall well-being, and 70% reported that being outdoors is liberating. The great outdoors, according to REI, is a place where we can “opt out of cultural pressures to conform”, especially for women.  We applaud REI’s efforts to put women front and center in all they do (click here for more info on their Force of Nature initiative), and to help level the outdoor playing field even more, we are sharing pieces of advice from some outdoor female role models that make us all want to ditch our indoor spaces and get out and explore nature.
