The Gift of Female Presence

GoldieBlox, the toy company with a focus on promoting engineering as a career for young girls, recently launched a new #BeLikeHer campaign celebrating female role models in sports, politics, and STEM. The video does a wonderful job showcasing the importance of role models.

Finding powerful and positive role models for young girls shouldn’t be hard, right? After all, so many of them instantly come to mind (and can be found in the GoldieBlox video) such as athlete Serena Williams, NASA engineer Mary Jackson, and comedian Kate McKinnon. We’re even seeing more women take on strong, fictional characters like Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman and Jodie Whitaker becoming the first-ever female Doctor Who. There isn’t a lack of female role models to choose from, however, there is no doubt that greater visibility would be a benefit to all.

I have often referenced the mantra, “You can’t be what you can’t see.” This phrase is part of the foundation of the work we do through Generation WOW, our teen girl mentoring program and the inspiration behind the soon-to-be-released book WOWsdom! The Girl’s Guide to the Positive and the Possible. It’s important that we, as a community, never stop highlighting and bringing into focus t he qualities and positive accomplishments of great women and their stories. Girls, and bigger girls like us, truly benefit from learning that there are trailblazers and pathfinders who have and are paving away for the dreams we think we pursue alone. Life is a team sport, and the more we share, the more we learn, the more we learn, the more we grow.

The magic really is in the everyday. Today, more than ever, girls need to see women from all walks of life–women just like you. Every one of us has their own unique story that has shaped us. These stories are powerful and touch resonant chords often in ways we do not anticipate. By all means, own being a role model and the contributions you can make to young girls’ lives, just by living and sharing yours.

Let them know the women that have inspired you, and know that you are inspiring others as undoubtedly right now someone is on the path that you have already paved. Are you ready to help her run the world?

If you missed seeing the GoldieBlox video, you can watch it here.

Share with us your female role models–should we feature them on our website? Tweet us, or post on our Facebook page.

Lots of summer left for some of us, and for the rest, school bells will soon be ringing. Enjoy!
