Finding Motivation and Direction: Generation W 2013 Attendee, Linda Ryan

make-it-happenIt was 2013, and Linda Ryan’s friend was asking her to go to something called Generation W. “A women’s motivational event,” said her friend.  Linda agreed to go, having no expectations of the event at all.  Maybe it was something that would give her insight about how to navigate the turns her life was taking.

You see, Linda had just finished fighting cervical cancer — for the third time.  She had finished the treatments a year prior, but she never expected that the year AFTER treatment would be harder for her, emotionally.  Life just doesn’t go back to normal once you’ve finished cancer treatment.

Linda was looking for ways to move forward. So, hoping the trip would be fun and good excuse to go out with friends, Linda signed up to go to Generation W.

“When I got to Generation W, I found the topics and breakout sessions just spoke to me,” says Linda. “Sitting in the audience at Generation W, I was struck by the fact that I could make more of a difference and an impact. “

“The breakout session on how to be your own life facilitator made me feel empowered and that I could get there, where ever ‘there’ was.  Then I attended Dr. Nancy Snyderman’s session on “Owning Our Exit” – her message resonated with me. Add in the Women In Sports session, it all became clear on what I needed to do.”

Linda knew fitness helped her in her battle with cancer.  She now had a direction, and she was going to focus on charity – The MeStrong 5K to benefit people battling cancer and to raise funds towards cancer research.  In 2012, her good friends had created The MeStrong 5K in Linda’s honor.  Linda knew her goal was to grow the event and expand the support it provides cancer patients. The MeStrong 5K (www.MeStrong.net) recently had its 3rd annual run in Deland, FL on Feb. 1, 2014.  More than 1,700 people participated in the run.  The MeStrong 5K has already expanded into Massachusetts, with the second annual race taking in Lexington, MA, on September 6, 2014.  And plans are in the works for a MeStrong 5K in Houston, TX, on October 18, 2014, bringing the positive message of facing cancer with health, laughter, and friendship to Texas.
