4 Q’s with WJCT’s Karen Feagins

2b4e013As the Vice President of Content and Operations for WJCT, Karen Feagins is one very busy lady.  She leads the teams that make programming decisions and produce all of the local shows for both radio and TV as well as the engineering and IT group.  “I’m proud that WJCT is a truly local, mission-driven station that is bringing members of our community together and creating programming that educates and inspires,” says Karen.  As Karen prepares to inspire us during this year’s Generation W, she shares the importance of listening to your gut and why she is looking forward to once again being a part of Generation W.

Q1:  What does the phrase “Passion and Purpose” mean to you? Do you have an example of how you have turned a passion into a purpose?
Purpose is the reason for our work and passion is the driving force behind that work, and the two go hand in hand. (And I use the word work loosely here– your purpose may not be at all related to your career). I was passionate about this community and about public media before I started working at WJCT and I’m lucky enough to have found a place where my passion and purpose align.

Q2:  What tips do you have for other women who want to have passion & purpose in their lives?
I’m a big believer in listening to your gut and living honestly. You’ll never be happy if you’re living your life based on others’ expectations. Evaluate what makes you feel alive and instead of focusing on the barriers in your way, look at what you can do to change your life accordingly.

Q3:   What are you looking forward to most during this year’s Generation W? Is there a particular speaker and/or program you can’t wait to see?
Last year I really enjoyed the panel discussions. It was so interesting to hear accomplished women discussing issues, each providing their unique perspectives.

Q4:  Share with us how you are currently involved with the Jacksonville community and why that is so important for you.
I am involved with the University of North Florida Spinnaker Media Advisory Board because I enjoy working with the next generation of journalists and communication professionals.

WJCT is a Generation W Media Partner and is also the producer of Generation W Profiles.
