Girl Up United Nations Association Discussion

September 21, 2015 @ 6:30 pm
Jacksonville University, Gooding Auditorium
2800 University Blvd
Jacksonville, FL 32211

Two Fleming Island High School students, Ava Lopez and Rachel Thompson, will be leading the discussion and sharing their experiences from their intensive three week long “Women in Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Design and Maths” (WiSci STEAM) camp in Rwanda. The students were selected by the Secretary’s Office of Global Partnerships at the US Dept. of State. 30 U.S. students were selected to attend the camp and Fleming Island High School was the only school in the U.S. to have 2 students attend. The WiSci Camp brought together 120 talented girls from Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, Rwanda, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, and the United States. The camp was created to reduce the strong gender imbalance that exists internationally with regard to women’s presence in the STEM fields of science, technology, engineering and math as well as facilitate positive cultural understanding between nations.

The discussion will be held at Jacksonville University, Monday, September 21st at 6:30 PM in the Gooding Auditorium. The US State Department, Girl Up, Girl Rising and WomenOne will all be promoting the local United Nations Association and JU Political Science Society discussion that the club will be hosting at JU.
