The Sisters of St. Joseph Celebrate 150th Anniversary

The Sisters of St. Joseph of St. Augustine celebrate 150 years of service

This week marks the 150th anniversary of service for the Sisters of St. Joseph of St. Augustine. According to the St. Augustine Record, their ministry began with just eight sisters who taught freed slaves after the Civil War.  The ministry has continued to flourish through teaching in schools, working in heath care and in social services. “They began a mighty wave that would stretch from Pensacola to Fernandina, flowing all the way down the state to Homestead,” said Sister Jane Stoecker, general superior of the Sisters of St. Joseph. “It is not just about the ‘first eight’ and that is that. It is about the ordinary women who had the greatest riches that they lavishly passed on.”  Click here for more of their story.
